Project 1
Karuizawa Whisky
Founded in 1955, Karuizawa gained an enviable cachet among whisky aficionados for its high-quality, small-batch releases.
After closure in 2000, a revival led by Shigeru Totsuka and members of the original distilling team, supported by the local council and a partnership with Japanese whisky retailer Dekanta Whisky, they restored the Karuizawa name.
The new Karuizawa Whisky distillery, built in 2022, located at the base of Mount Asama, an active volcano, sees water flow through volcanic lava rock giving its liquid a unique quality.
GStudio captures how Master distiller Yoshiyuki Nakazato, a Karuizawa veteran, strives to replicate the original processes while adapting to modern techniques.
